FAQ

Common questions.

Why a flat fee instead of a percentage of assets?

A percentage-of-assets fee rises with your portfolio even when the work doesn't. Our flat fee is set by the complexity of your situation, so you know the cost upfront, and our advice isn't influenced by how much money stays invested with us.

What does “fee-only” mean?

Fee-only means the only money I earn comes directly from you, the client. I don’t sell insurance, annuities, or investment products, and I don’t accept commissions, referral fees, or kickbacks from anyone. My recommendations have no hidden incentive behind them, so if I suggest something, it’s because I think it’s right for you.

One thing to watch for: “fee-only” is different from “fee-based.” Fee-based advisors charge fees and can earn commissions on products they sell. The names sound almost the same, but the conflicts of interest are very different.

Do you manage my investments?

Yes. Investment management is included. We build low-cost, globally diversified portfolios, held in your name at Altruist, our custodian.

Where will my investments be held?

Your assets are held by an independent, third-party custodian, Altruist. We are granted “limited power of attorney” to trade and manage the accounts on your behalf, but your money stays in your name. Learn more about Altruist.

Do you only work with people in tech?

No. Many of our clients work in tech or have equity compensation, but we work with LGBTQ+ high earners and allies in any field, including healthcare, law, finance, and business ownership.

Do you work with clients outside Texas?

Yes. We're based in Texas and work with clients virtually across the U.S.

Do you prepare tax returns?

No. We provide tax planning, not tax preparation. Jason builds your projection and strategy, then coordinates with your CPA or preparer.

Do I need to be LGBTQ+ to work with you?

No. Allies are welcome. Our practice is built to be inclusive of every kind of family and identity.

Are you a fiduciary?

Yes. We're a fee-only registered investment adviser and act as a fiduciary. We never earn commissions.

I'm at a private company with no liquidity yet. Is it too early?

Usually it's the best time. Many of the biggest tax decisions, like early exercise, 83(b) elections, ISO timing, and QSBS, happen before there's any liquidity.
